Audacity multi-tracking

What?

In Audacity, adding multiple tracks to your recording is simplicity itself.

Why?

Since I was very small I’ve wanted to be able to record multiple tracks in the style of one of my earliest heroes, Mike Oldfield. Read my blog post about the Blue Peter programme which ignited my interest in this. Multi-tracking is, of course, the basis of the vast majority of recorded music. Until fairly recently you needed a very expensive studio to achieve this. Even when cheap, multi-track tape recorders came along it was still a very complicated process to record anything decent. This has all changed since the advent of digital recording and on-screen visualisations like in Audacity.

Now anyone can record as many tracks as Queen did on Bohemian Rhapsody. Not everyone, of course, will have the requisite musical genius to produce the world’s most popular rock song but at least we can all make multi=track recordings with this brilliant, simple tool – for free!

How?

First of all you need to set Audacity up for multi-tracking like this:

When you have your musical instrument to hand, put on your headphones and get ready:

As usual with Audacity, it really is that simple to create multi-tracks. What will you record? Add it to Audioboo or another sharing site and send me a link!
